Maruti Suzuki launched the Ignis in India at a starting price tag of Rs. 4.59 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi). On paper, the Ignis looks like a full package and has looks of an SUV with ease of a hatchback. If we look at the pricing, then it will compete with Mahindra KUV100. Mahindra launched the KUV100 last year with a starting price of Rs 4.42 (ex-showroom, Pune) for the petrol engine and Rs 5.22 lakh (ex-showroom, Pune) for the diesel variant.

We compare the Ignis with the KUV100 based on the specifications and lets see who will manage to dominate the hatchback segment.

Design

Maruti Suzuki Ignis

Maruti Suzuki Ignis design resembles a lot with Wagon R and you get a smart blend of hatchback & SUV. The Ignis adds an SUV-like design elements and it features a U-shaped LED-projector headlamp with LED DRLs (Daytime Running Lamps) at the front and plastic cladding on the rear bumper with clear lens tail lamps. The car also gets full wheel covers on the lower trims and alloy wheels on the top-end trim. The interior reminds a lot about Celerio and the entire layout of the dashboard is new with straight lines dividing the top and bottom half.

Mahindra KUV100
The Mahindra KUV100 is based on the compact crossover theme and built on the monocoque chassis like its elder sibling SUV500. The Mahindra KUV100 features such as follow me headlamps, LED DRLs (Daytime Running Lamps) and plastic black cladding with fog lamps at the front. Additionally, it features electrically adjustable ORVMs (Outside Rear View Mirrors) and 6-spoke alloy wheels.

Engine

Maruti Suzuki Ignis

The Ignis comes into two engines – 1.2-litre VVT petrol and 1.3-litre DDis diesel engine. The 1.2-litre petrol engine produces a maximum power output of 83hp and a maximum torque of 113NM. The 1.3-litre diesel engine produces a peak power of 75hp and a maximum torque of 119Nm. Both are paired to five-speed manual gearbox as standard and has an option for AMT gearbox.

Mahindra KUV100

The KUV100 comes into two engines – petrol and diesel. The Petrol variant comes with a mFalcon G80 1198cc unit which produces 82 bhp @ 5500 rpm and 115 Nm of torque @ 3500-3600 rpm. It is paired to 5-speed manual gearbox.
The diesel variant comes with a mFalcon D75 1198cc unit (turbocharger with intercooler) that churns out 77 bhp @ 3750 rpm and 190 Nm of torque @ 1750 – 2250 rpm. It is also mated to a 5-speed manual.

Performance

Maruti Suzuki Ignis

According to Maruti claims, the Ignis offers a fuel efficiency of 20.89kmpl for the petrol variant and 26.80kpl for the diesel engine.

Mahindra KUV100

The KUV100 delivers fuel efficiency of 18.15kmpl for the petrol engine and 25.32kmpl for the diesel engine.

Features

Maruti Suzuki Ignis

The Maruti Suzuki Ignis comes with features like projector headlamps with LED DRLs, 15-inch alloy wheels, Smartplay touchscreen infotainment with Apple CarPlay, automatic climate control, keyless go with push button start and 2 DIN audio system. The availability of the feature depends upon the choice of variants.

Mahindra KUV100

The Mahindra KUV100 will be available in two options – 5-seater (2+3) and 6-seater (3+3), while the 6-seater can be converted into a 5-seater by just folding the extra seat, giving more space to the driver. It comes with tubeless radials, fuel tank capacity is 35 litres, day-time running lamps, infotainment system inside with bluetooth connectivity, USB & AUX, the steering wheel has audio & phone controls. There is a power/eco mode in the diesel variant.

Mahindra has announced that the ABS will be made standard across the range. In addition to this, there are dual airbags available across the range also and the variants with airbags will sport a “+” badge. It also has Isofix child seat mounts on the rear seat. Another safety feature is automatic hazard lamps that turn on during panic braking. The car comes with dual rear fog lamps and there is plenty of storage space available and additional space under the passenger seat.

Pricing

Maruti Suzuki Ignis
The Maruti Suzuki Ignis base variant has been priced at Rs. 4.59 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) while the diesel base variant has a price tag of Rs. 6.39 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Mahindra KUV100

The Mahindra KUV100 base variant has been priced at Rs 4.42 lakh (ex-showroom, Pune) while the diesel base variant has a price tag of Rs. 5.22 lakh (ex-showroom, Pune)

Variants

Maruti Suzuki Ignis
The Maruti Suzuki Ignis will be available in four different variants, Sigma, Delta, Zeta and Alpha. The Sigma variant of the Ignis will only be offered as a petrol option while the other three will be offered with both, petrol and diesel options.

Mahindra KUV100

The Mahindra KUV 100 will come with variants like K2, K4, K6 and the top of the line K8. The K8 will come with all the bells and whistles which include chrome inserts, alloy wheels, puddle lamps, daytime running lamps, a start/stop micro-hybrid feature among others.

Colors

Maruti Suzuki Ignis

The Maruti Suzuki Ignis is available in single and dual tone colour options. The single tone colours are Pearl Artic White, Uptown Red, Silky Silver, Tinsel Blue, Glistening Grey and Urban Blue.

Mahindra KUV100

The Mahindra KUV100 will be available in seven colours including Fiery Orange, Flamboyant Red, Dazzling Silver, Aquamarine, Pearl White, Designer Grey and Midnight Black.

Dimensions

Maruti Suzuki Ignis
The Maruti Suzuki Ignis measures length at 3,700mm in length, 1,660mm in height and 1,595mm in width with a 2,438mm long wheelbase. The ground clearance is 180mm. When it comes to the boot capacity, the Maruti Suzuki Ignis packs 258 litres space which can be expanded to 415 litres.

Mahindra KUV100

The Mahindra KUV100 measure 3,675mm in length, 1,635mm in height, 1,715mm in width with a 2,385mm long wheelbase. The ground clearance is 170mm. When it comes to boot capacity, the subcompact SUV offers 243 litre of space which can be expanded to 473 litres by folding the rear seats.
