Almost a week after its International launch, Royal Enfield has launched the WWII-inspired Classic 500 Pegasus Edition in India at a price tag of ₹ 2.49 lakh (on road Maharashtra) and ₹ 2.40 lakh (on-road Delhi). The price also includes helmet, canvas panniers, and Pegasus Shirt. The online registration for interested customers will begin from today itself and it will go on sale on 10th July 2018 exclusively on the Royal Enfield website. Only 1,000 units of this Classic 500 Pegasus edition will be made available globally, out of this India will be getting only 250 motorcycles, while the 190 units will be sold in the UK, the remaining 560 units will be sold in US and Australia. The Classic 500 Pegasus edition is designed to pay homage to Royal Enfield early motorcycles – RE/WD 125 from WWII, it was used by the paratroopers in the British army who served in the World War II.
Mechanically, the Royal Enfield Pegasus Edition uses the same engine as that of the standard Classic 500. It is powered by 499 cc, air-cooled, single-cylinder engine that churns out a maximum power of 28PS at 5,250rpm and produces a peak torque of 41.2Nm at 4,000rpm. The engine mated to a 5-speed gearbox and the frame, suspension, and tyres remain the same as well. The Pegasus Edition has a kerb weight of 194 kg.
The Pegasus Edition pays homage to the RE/WD 125, also known as the ‘Flying Flea’, that was used by British paratroopers in World War II. The motorcycles were dropped from the Horsa Glider behind enemy lines for running communication and reconnaissance. The Classic 500 Pegasus reflects Royal Enfield’s heritage and it is available in two colour options internationally – Service Brown and Olive Drab Green. Indian buyers will get the brown colour as the green colour, is reserved for Indian Army vehicles.
Considering the rich history, the Pegasus Edition will feature a couple of cosmetic changes like a bespoke set of military-style canvas panniers, the Pegasus logo on the fuel tank, and unique serial number stencilled on the fuel tank, just like the motorcycles used in World War II. The chrome inserts found on the Classic 500 are also replaced with more subtle blacked-out elements on the headlight bezel, kickstart lever, wheel rims, exhaust, pedals, engine cover. Each motorcycle has brown handlebar grips, and a leather strap with brass buckles across the air filter to accentuate the period look.
Additionally, an array of Gear, inspired by this decorated motorcycling legacy, is also going to be available. Ranging from shirts, t-shirts, caps, lapel pins, bags and helmets, the limited-production apparels & accessories of this collection are also adorned by the official military insignia & the Pegasus emblem.

“The association with the Pegasus Parachute Regiment is another reminder of how Royal Enfield history is deeply steeped in motorcycling pedigree. I am confident that the Classic Pegasus edition will, like many of our other armed forces inspired variants, become a collectors’ piece. We have been making army tough and versatile machines – ‘Made Like a Gun’ – since 1901, and we will continue to share some of these ‘hidden gems’ and stories through our motorcycles.”
