Volvo has launched the company’s most affordable SUV – XC40 in India at an introductory price Rs. 39.9 lakh (ex-showroom, India). The Volvo XC40 joins the X60 and XC90 and completes the company’s range of SUVs in India. The Volvo XC40 comes in three colours – Crystal White, Bursting Blue, and Passion Red colour and it is available across dealerships starting today. The Volvo XC40 is available in a single top-level trim, R-Design trim and marks the entry into the compact luxury SUV segment, where it will take on BMW X1, Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLA, Range Rover Evoque, new Lexus NX, and Jaguar E-Pace.
The Volvo XC40 follows the Volvo’s current design language and is a head-turner as it gets the distinctive front grille, and rear tail lamps along with the signature “Thor’s Hammer” LED daytime running lights. It is based on the manufacturer’s Compact Modular Architecture platform and R-design trim gets a lovely two-tone paint job, and there is a black roof with blackened A-pillars which is standard for all colour. It boasts an unladen ground clearance of 211mm, and as far as dimensions go, the XC40 is marginally larger than its aforementioned German rivals.
The XC40R-Design trim is filled with features. The interior of the Volvo XC40 features a premium black upholstery with lava carpeting (you can get it changed to all-black), and door inserts, adding a contrast to the cabin. The other details include the large 9.0-inch Sensus touchscreen system that gets Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, vertical A/C vents, faux-stud trim, leather-suede mixed seat covers, panoramic sunroof, keyless entry with a start/stop button, and a 13-speaker high-end audio system from Harmon/Kardon. The three-spoke steering wheel gets leather stitching, and the gear knob also gets leather stitching. The SUV also offers Wireless smartphone charging, powered tailgate with a food wave function for opening and closing, reverse camera, park assist, all as part of standard equipment.
In terms of safety, the Volvo XC40 follows the tradition and gets 7 airbags along with a bunch of radar. The XC40 is very safe as it is the only SUV in its segment that gets a radar-based driving assist and safety assist system like Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping aid, Collision Mitigation, City Safe with pedestrian, cyclist, large animal detection, and Driver Alerts.
The Volvo XC40 is powered by a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine that churns out 190PS of maximum power and produces a peak torque of 400Nm. The engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission, and Haldex AW with different drive modes – Eco, Comfort, Dynamic, Off-Road, and Individual modes. Internationally, the Volvo XC40 available with a range of engine options.
