Mercedes-Benz, the renowned luxury car manufacturer has launched the second-generation of the Mercedes-AMG G 63 luxury SUV in India at a price tag of ₹ 2.19 Crore (ex-showroom, India). The 2018 Mercedes-AMG G 63 comes with extensive changes like the new high-end interior, chiselled body straight lines, and subtle curves.
The new Mercedes-AMG G 63 takes performance levels to new heights and it is based on ladder frame chassis. The Mercedes-AMG G63 is powered by a 4.0-litre V8 twin-turbo engine that churns out 585PS of maximum power and produces a peak torque of 850Nm. The power is sent to all four wheels via Merc’s AMG Performance 4Matic four-wheel drive and reaches to 0-100kmph in just 4.5 seconds and goes on to electronically limited top speed of 220kmph. The engine is mated to the brand new 9-speed dual-clutch gearbox and as per EU ratings, it offers a mileage of 7.5kmpl. The AMG Ride Control drive mode system has been reworked with new componentry to suit this car’s more dynamic set up with additional modes to aid off-roading. An LED and the central driver’s display indicate which lock is currently active.
For the first time in the history of the Mercedes-AMG G-Class, the driving characteristics can be individualized at the touch of a finger with five on-road and three off-road driving modes. With the five DYNAMIC SELECT on-road modes “Slippery”, “Comfort”, “Sport”, “Sport+” and “Individual”, the characteristics range from efficient and comfortable to very sporty. Three off-road modes – “Sand”, “Trail” and “Rock” – are available when driving off the beaten track.
On the front, the new Mercedes-AMG G 63 retains the boxy design of its predecessor and if you look closely you’ll notice there are few more rounded edge, retro style pull-type door handles, external door hinges, and turn indicators mounted on top of the front fender. There’s also a unique grille with twelve vertical slats, “V8 Biturbo” lettering on the front wings, a new bumper with air intakes, new AMG specific side skirts, Panamericana grille that Mercedes-Benz using on its high-end AMG models, and a set of really cool circular daytime running lights. The headlamps are now all-LED and so are the tail lamps. Apart from this, the Mercedes-AMG G 63 gets new transfer case gear ratios, intelligent diffs, a rear axle ground clearance of 214mm, flared wheel arches, standard 20-inch (22-inch optional) alloy wheels along with red brake callipers and chromed side-mounted exhaust pipes.
The interiors of the Mercedes-AMG G 63 completely reworked and received updates as per other Merc’s-AMG lineup. On the inside, the Mercedes-AMG G 63 gets iconic differential lock buttons on the centre console, 12.3-inch digital displays, analogue instrument cluster, quilted seats, contrast stitching. Other features are flat-bottom steering wheel finished in carbon-fibre, paddle shifter, a wheel centring marker, electrically-adjustable driver’s seat with memory function, heated front and rear seats, luxury front head restraints, unique adornments like stall plates and larger cabin space.
On the safety side, the Mercedes-AMG G 63 comes with an Active Brake Assist that gives the driver a visual warning if the distance from the vehicle in front is too small. An audible warning sounds when a danger of collision is identified; it can also provide braking assistance in line with the situation at hand and if the driver fails to react, initiate autonomous braking. Away from off-road terrain, Active Lane Keeping Assist can detect when the car leaves its lane unintentionally, warn the driver by making the steering wheel vibrate, and actuate the brakes on one side to help manoeuvre the vehicle back into its lane. The optional Driving Assistance package includes Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC as well as Blind Spot Assist. This combination makes life easier for the driver when driving in convoy on motorways and main roads as well as in stop-and-go traffic, and it can enhance safety by monitoring the vehicle’s blind spot. The new G 63 cocoons the passengers with a total of 9 airbags. AMG high-performance braking system provides optimum deceleration whatever the terrain. Precise controllability and low response times ensure optimum safety on and off the road. The electric parking brake is integrated into the rear axle calliper and can be activated and released at the press of a button.
